Think you’ve got your branding figured out?
I thought I did—until I learned something very important from my friend and mentor, Steve D. Sims.
Steve’s not just someone who talks about branding; he’s someone who lives it. He’s built a reputation as the guy who makes the impossible happen. And his lesson on branding hit me like a front kick to the chest.
Here’s what he taught me:
Branding isn’t just a logo.
It’s not a tagline.
It’s not even a flashy website.
Branding is a feeling.
It’s what people say about you when you’re not in the room.
Steve challenged me with a simple question:
"Are you in control of your brand?"
It made me stop and think about how my studio shows up online, in the community, and even on the mat.
He gave me this exercise: Google yourself.
What comes up?
For martial arts studio owners, that’s a powerful question. Is the first result your website? Is it your glowing reviews? Or is it something you’d rather not have represent you?
If your brand isn’t telling the story you want—online, in person, or in your classes—then someone else is controlling the narrative.
Here’s the thing about branding: it’s not about looking good on just one platform. Your brand needs to be consistent everywhere—from your website to Instagram, Facebook, and even your Google reviews.
Think about this:
Steve told me, “The best brands don’t adapt to platforms; they dominate them.”
And he’s right. Harley Davidson doesn’t change their story for TikTok. Nike doesn’t reimagine their mission for Instagram. They stay consistent, no matter the platform.
For martial arts studios, that means your messaging, values, and community-building efforts should align wherever you show up.
The most successful brands don’t sell products—they sell culture.
Apple isn’t just a phone; it’s a lifestyle.
Harley isn’t just a bike; it’s a brotherhood.
The same is true for your martial arts studio. You’re not just teaching kicks and punches; you’re creating a community. A place where families grow closer, kids gain confidence, and students of all ages feel like they belong.
And here’s the kicker: your brand’s reputation can take years to build but only days to destroy.
Social media is a double-edged sword—it can elevate your brand or tear it down. That’s why you need to protect your reputation like your studio depends on it.
Because it does.
Steve left me with this powerful message:
"Control your story, build your culture, and make people choose you—over and over again."
That’s what branding is about. It’s not about looking flashy or following trends; it’s about creating a feeling that makes people think, “This is the only place for me.”
This lesson from Steve D. Sims was just one of many lightbulb moments I’ve had from incredible mentors. And now, I want to share those lessons with you.
